Productive Insomnia, or, Things to Do at 2:30 a.m.

• Read. Hey, it’s productive.  Appreciate how quiet it is, for the most part, when the rest of the world is asleep.
• Write. See above, i.e. quiet.  Write about that dream you just had, no matter how fucked up it seemed.  I mean, dreams come from the subconscious.  If you are awake at 2:30 am, you obviously have a lot on your mind
• Draw random objects that make up the clutter on your desk.  It’s more fun than actually straightening and purging.  It’s a lot quieter, as well.
• Think of those who have no conscience and are sleeping like fucking babies. Jerks.
• Plot the overthrow of the local monarchy or of an imaginary third-world country.
• Listen to calming music.  With headphones, of course.
• Run around outside, banging a pot with a wooden spoon, shouting “They’re coming!  They’re coming!” You will get some exercise and be able to sleep.  Your neighbors, on the other hand, will now be lying awake wondering who “they” are and why they are coming.
• Create your own monster, even if it’s only on paper.
• Sit outside on your porch or patio, or out in the yard, close your eyes and listen for sounds you’ve never heard before.
• Make a short term “to be read list.”
• Enjoy the silence.  Seriously, there is way too much noise during the day.  Subliminal messaging through your electronic device usually only happens during the so-called “waking hours,” whatever that means.
• Make a random list of things you want to do the next time you are awake at 2 in the freaking morning
• Take a hot bath
• Go back to bed.
